It was really fun to look at Marilyn‘s work and have to take time to decide which one we
wanted to focus on. They are all so colourful and full of life. Out of the pieces that are
currently on display I chose one of her smaller black outlined pieces, it just stood out.
Full of vibrancy the colourfully drawn and painted flower shapes create a kaleidoscope
( to use one of Marilyn‘s words) pulling one in. Black paper outline placed on top of the
vibrant colours adding layers to almost create the third eyes looking out with unknown
wisdom.
Marilyn has had an extensive career in a variety of different areas. After a 25 year
career in Garden design and installation which also involved teaching she returned to
school to study literature and poetry.
During that time, Marilyn began to work in a slew of mediums including painting, sewing
and collage. Over a period of the last 20 years Her passion and skill for writing has also
allowed her to be published several times. She recently finished her sixth book, a
cookbook.
Growth and further learning through life's adventures, and teaching her creativity has
ebbed over into Acrylic painting, she now creates eye catching and detailed paintings
one can get lost in.
Marilyn shared her love for using bright colours creating contrasts and adding
beads, paper and glitter to her work. You’ll often see found items also included which
add a whole other dimension.
Colour and vibrancy in her creations fit her personality according to Marilyn and we
would all agree with that. She is well known for her bubbly personality, kindness and
wonderful cooking skills which she often brings as snacks and goodies to meetings and
sometimes just for the heck of it. She shared with me she is not only a passionate artist
in mixed media but her love for cooking and baking always shines through. Much of her
art is based on intuition and flow as she moves from one Project to the next, some she
keeps and others are left to the side.
Marilyn joined DAS 2 ½ years ago, where she creates an atmosphere of comfortability
with most everyone she meets , she often has along with her paintings, jewelry and
access to her cookbooks at her display at DAS. On occasion she can also be found
performing her poetry at Denver Arts Society open mics night.
