This is a story about an old man, named Dick. Well Ole’ Dick is from a town called sayre, but its usually combined with its sister town waverly. Anyways, lill Dickie grew up in the stixx. Back then he might not have thought of himself as a hick, but from the stories he’s told me… well thats just my uneducated opinion i guess. Anyways, by the time Dick was in high school, the whole country was in an uproar over a war… a war we’ll never hear the end of. And by we, I mean russians. And by the way, im not Russian.

While the guy that Sean Connery played in Red October was sweating bullets in his sub, young Dick was racing cars down highway 15 in the souther tier of NY. And by the time he was my age, right now as I write this (24), he had just started in the car business. The fixin up part that is. So now Ole’ Dick owns his own shop here in B-Town, or wait a minute “the greater Johnson City area”. And Im the kinda guy that has car problems, weather its crashen em or neglectin em, they finds there way to the shop. And one day I was driving around the C-dubb, and I bring it in for a heater core or some similar issue and now I get a different story every time I go in. Actually, he tells so many, that once in awhile he’ll stop and say “did I already tell ya this one?”. And I think for a few seconds… uhhhh possibly my memory isn’t working right now.

I’ve gotten a lot of responses to my last post. I want to be clear.

We are arts teachers. The work we do creates a better future for everyone. Our work opens minds. Our work engages students. Our work strengthens essential ties between schools, communities, and families.

Make no mistake, many students get an excellent arts education. Our teachers have never been more passionate. Our culture has never been richer. Our standards have never been higher.

We believe universal access to the arts is not a privilege. It’s a right.

We teach the arts to give people a chance to express themselves, explore new ideas, and grow as compassionate, driven, capable individuals.

Our programs cost money, but we don’t take a single penny from the government. In the last few weeks, we’ve received more $10 donations that I can count, from people who share our passion.

Your voice can be heard, whether it’s by donating, volunteering, or simply taking the time to stop by our building and starting a conversation.

We’re almost there. We’re very close. Please help us cross the finish line.

Make your 2012 donation to support us with a gift in any amount, and help us reach our goal right now.

Together, we are making the world a better place — and we’re doing it in an incredibly rich, creative, and positive fashion.

I’d like to personally extend my thanks to every teacher reading this. You are the real heroes of this day and age.

Thank you,

Sean

We believe independent artists are stronger together. The Denver Art Society has a brand new Co-Op known as the Art Council. We are looking for Members to join and help us curate our 10,000 sq. ft. building in the heart of the Arts District on Santa Fe Dr.

Membership to sit on the Art Council at Denver Art Society costs $50 per month and includes many perks:

Exhibit and sell your art on the First Friday ArtWalk

Exhibit and sell your art on Third Friday (Art Collector’s Night)

Free entrance and participation in monthly Peer Critique sessions (only for the brave

Free access to arts classes and creative seminar sessions

Free admission to our monthly Art Salon (Hosted by Maxwell Gallery)

Discounts to coffee shops and art supply stores throughout Denver

The Art Council also participates in shows at partner galleries thoughout the city, and solo show opportunities are available for Members beginning their third month as a Member.

We’re not just looking for anyone, though. You must be approved by a majority of standing Members. Specifically, we’re looking for people exceptional talent and a passion for creativity and arts education. If you can teach a class once a month to local students, that’s a huge plus.

It is essential that you are willing to roll up your sleeves. If you haven’t been to DAS lately, it’s not exactly a five-star art gallery. Instead, it’s a work in progress. We have a huge building in the best location, but you’ll be asked to help us make it look good before shows. Sometimes this involves picking up a broom. Sometimes this involves helping paint the walls. We will be considerate of your particular talents and limitations, but basically it is a co-operative so everyone has to pitch in. We’re not looking for artists who don’t want to engage their fellow artists. It is a co-op and together we have to do all the work. We aren’t funded by the government or from grants — We must do everything ourselves. That being said, no one is going to get in our way or tell us what to do. For example, there is absolutely no censorship of any kind.

Interested? Click here and sign up. Be sure to include a link to your art or a sample of your piece in the “Logo” section. If you are not voted in, your Membership dues will be refunded.

Thanks everyone! See you Jan 6!

I became a member of the Denver Art Society 28 months ago because I believe we are on the brink of a new creative renaissance here in Colorado, and that creative education is the key to making this happen.

Right now, many kids in our own neighborhood don’t have any arts classes at all. Yet, what better way is there to strengthen our communities, our economy, or our young minds than by investing in creative education? That’s why we are building a new, free, creative youth learning facility at 7th & Santa Fe Dr.

Since we started DAS, more than 1,400 people have fueled our movement by donating a few dollars on First Friday, becoming an Official Member, or by lending a hand to help build our first school.

We’re not like other nonprofits. We’re volunteer-driven, member-powered, and wholly focused on the communities we serve.

If you’re not yet a member, consider joining the Denver Art Society today.

Together we show our art on the First Friday ArtWalk. We enjoy weekly events like Poetry As Muse, the Indie Underground Film Festival, and Art Out Loud Music Festival. Most importantly, we work to guarantee every student under the age of 25 free classes in art, music, dance, theater, and language.

I invite you to join us: Imagine a city in which every student has access to a free and complete education in the arts. That’s our commitment.

Join the Denver Art Society or simply learn more about Membership.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,

Sean

Good morning,

Artlessness is the best way to joblessness. That’s why we’re working so hard to make sure students in our neighborhood have universal access to the arts.

Truth is, imagination, creativity, and innovation make our streets safer, our economy stronger, and our families healthier.

A couch potato never changed the world. We need these classes.

It’s painful. It hurts me to see the state of arts in education today.

It’s scary to imagine a world without imagination.

Together, we’re getting back on the right track — Please take a minute to support the work we’re doing in the neighborhood.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As you’re considering who you’d like to support with your year-end donation, I would like to let you know that you’ll be hearing about our crucial goal to raise $12k by the end of the year.

We hope you’ll consider giving to support arts education in Denver.

It is thanks to you that we have had a great year! Here’s some of the accomplishments that your gifts made in our community last year:

Gave an old, abandoned 10k sq. ft. building a face lift that allowed us to offer it back to the community in support of local arts and local arts education.

United 25 independent artists and teachers for a common cause to benefit the neighborhood.

Kick started programming for students in local schools.

Hosted family-friendly cultural events, poetry readings, music concerts, and art shows aimed at expanding people’s horizons and fostering their own creativity.

But there’s more we can do, and with your continued support we hope to have another successful year in 2012. Some of our goals for 2012 include:

Completing repairs on our Community Cultural Center.

Increasing active Members to 100 independent artists.

Expanding programming in local schools.

Hosting weekly, family-friendly cultural events.

We’re shooting for a big goal in the next two weeks, and we need everyone to join together.

Can you chip in $12 or more now to help us reach our goal?

Yes, I can help today with a year-end gift in any amount $1 or more.

Give today and 100% of your donation goes to on-the-ground project costs. Plus, all donations and Membership dues made by December 31st, 2011 are tax-deductible for this year.

Learn more about donations, donate to support our programs, or become a Member with a tax-deductible donation.

As the moon dissolved in the dawn

And the sun stretched its arms with a Yawn,

Mama would recite her poetry

As millions of shadows climbed the day

Her voice was So crisp, So clear,

Tears would slip down the petals of daffodils

With humbled bumblebees resting peacefully on their leaves.

Wind would hide its furry behind speechless trees

With shocked raindrops caught
In the reflection of shooting stars

Now streaming down the sky’s new born cheek

Like the tears of a mother witnessing

Her child’s first crawl across the canopy of being.

Soon all the clocks would stop at Toc.

Allowing the hour to just weep and weep

Forming a symphony of pleas insisting

The eloquence never be ceased…

Looking to be a part of a great movement working to bring free creative education to everyone? Looking to volunteer at fun, cultural events like poetry slams, art salons, art critiques, and music concerts?

We are recruiting people to help us plan and host cultural events at the Denver Art Society, 734 Santa Fe Dr. The type of events we try to throw are focused on the humanities, freedom of expression, and family-friendly.

For example, last week we had an amazing poetry reading. There was a dj spinning spoken-word records from the 1940s. There were 10 poets who stood up and read. There were 2 year olds, 10 year olds, and 18 year olds participating. Everyone had a great time and there were some real, serious ideas proposed.

It’s about great ideas. We are about creative education and our events need to reflect that.

If you are interested in helping us throw cultural, community events based in the arts, music, dance, literature, or drama, please get in touch with us. We are looking for event planners to help us turn the Denver Art Society into the center of Denver’s creative renaissance — a rebirth of creative thinking right here on the ArtWalk.

Together, we are working towards a stronger community — especially for the 1,700 kids in our neighborhood who don’t have access to a single class in arts, music, theater, dance OR literature.

Please send an email to events@denverartsociety.org with a paragraph about yourself, a few examples of events you’ve planned, and the reason why you are interested in volunteering for our organizations.

Thanks all!

-DAS Family

Membership dues are $600/mo. and two months’ dues are requested up front. There is no further commitment than the two months’ dues, however many protections are provided Members once they join, ensuring you can stay as long as you like.
This show is a continued exploration of using candy to create art. Candy holds memories from childhood—color, smell, texture and taste—that evoke feelings of being carefree and uninhibited. I’m fascinated with the dichotomy of using those kind of feelings to create something so structured and pixelated as video game imagery. There’s a beauty to the perfect arrangement and a nostalgia to the edgy and “blocky” feel to it all—“This is what they looked like when I was a kid.” Because computers are continually striving to perfectly reproduce reality, it’s almost refreshing to go back and live in the world where computers and the real world had very little in common… a fantasy land of Space Invaders and lollipops.

We currently have 4 out of 5 members and are looking for one new member this month. Dues are $600/month. Learn more or sign up.

The Denver Art Society runs a children’s art school on site, so although you have a right to express anything you wish and your rights against censorship will be protected, we ask that anything you show be appropriate for the kids who will see it.

100% of your membership dues are a donation to the Treehouse Youth Art School, serving Baker, Lincoln, Downtown, and Golden Triangle neighborhoods with free K-12 Arts Classes.

Setup times begin at noon. Tear-down must be finished at 10pm.

Hello:

In our pursuit to strengthen independent artists, we are creating an art studio co-op on the ArtWalk.

The Denver Art Underground, an art studio co-op located underneath 734 Santa Fe Dr., will open May 1st. We are looking for four more artists to join the co-op and get a 200-300 sq. ft. studio space and gallery under the ArtWalk for just $150/mo.

Learn more about renting a Studio in Denver Art Underground

We started the Underground to give artists, photographers, designers, and creatives in need of a personal and communal workspace. The advantage of a cooperative organization is that our Members work together rather than simply in isolation.

Establishing a critical mass helps to address concerns such as market standards, rights protection and licensing fees for the reuse of our images. As the market consolidates and concerns over the future of the industry escalate, strength in numbers will become more critical, as will the need for artists to protect the licensing and distribution of their images.

Together, we can strengthen the independent artist, and bring some youth and vitality back to the heart of the Art District.

Artists interested in joining should first carefully read the Art Council Member Agreement. Then, if you are still interested, click here to apply for a Studio in the Denver Art Underground.

Prospective artists please reach out to sean@dpau.org if you have any questions about the space, the artists, or the program.

Best Wishes.

Don’t forget Friday is the first Friday of the month (for many, it is the first first Friday of the year).

So, yes, once again we find ourselves brushing up with the latest contemporary art news to impress our fellow ArtWalkers. Or at least getting ready to drink free wine.

If you’ll be out, one great act to check out is Spook Handy, playing live at Su Teatro to benefit Gratis Studio. There will be a kids-sing-along from 5-6pm. The main concert will take place from 7-10pm.

Music lovers of all ages are invited to join. A signed guitar will be auctioned of during the show. 100% of the concert benefits Gratis Studio, an free inner city youth arts nonprofit.

It’s true — 100% of donations go straight to free arts classes for disadvantaged youth in Denver.

Join us Friday, April 1st at Su Teatro, 3721 Santa Fe Drive. You can also RSVP on FB.

Which exhibits are you looking forward to on Friday? Send your favs to art@denverart.co

It is my honor to announce the launch of Art Out Loud 2011. Thanks to hard work and the indefatigable support of our volunteers and donors, Art Out Loud Music Festival will now feature music and art students as well as professionals from across Colorado.

But many students are unable to afford the admission. So, we are asking you to help by sponsoring a student, and giving the gift of creativity to one child in Colorado today.

You will get a CD of your student’s final performance and get to watch your student’s final show at Art Out Loud Music Festival on Sept 17. We need your help today. Now, you can show a student in Colorado you believe in them.

Can you help us reach our goal — and help a student in need right now?

We are building momentum but need more supporters like you to chip in and help the 45 children who still need sponsors this month.

This year, Art Out Loud is your chance to directly impact the life of one student — and see directly the fruits of your contribution.

With your help, we can sponsor these kids like these in the next 48 hours and meet our goal — creating opportunities for creative students across the state.

WATCH THE VIDEO: How You Can Bring Opportunities to a Creative Child in Need »

We will begin to release more information about the lineup of bands and artists, as well as the event location, later next month. In the mean time, I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful project.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

All the Best,

Artist’s reception: Friday, January 21st from 6-9pm

In her newest body of work, Furness creates an epic environment that surrounds the individual, both within the painted works themselves as well as in an encompassing multi-media installation piece. The paintings explore the macro- and microcosms of cultures transformed by destruction in the past and reformed by a new view of culture today. Within these works, the psychology of the individual is explored through the metaphor of the swimmer, conjuring a sense of both hope and hopelessness, personal ruin and rebirth. In the installation, the viewer will be invited to stand before a 20-foot long wall-composition depicting ruins that are both familiar and foreign, moving in a space between as a video projection brings the iconic swimmer to life. The viewer will be invited to take part in the complexity of the work, as one is immersed in sublime destruction and transformed by a continuous sense of falling apart and coming together, a fertile unraveling that reveals what is now, new, and coming brought together with what is lost, fragmented, and forgotten.

Fancy Tiger Clothing announces it’s new location at 18 South Broadway, just one door south from the previous location. The new store opened Wednesday January 5th and the grand opening celebration is set for Friday February 4th at 7pm. Patrons can expect to see an increase in the amount and diversity of product on the floor. The store’s primary focus will remain on smaller independent lines from all over the globe as well as a selection of locally made items. Fancy Tiger Clothing teamed up with local furniture design duo Fin Art to create modular merchandising spaces in the store. A turntable DJ station will allow vinyl to play throughout the day creating a space to explore music.

For this month’s Denver Made event the focus will be on the new space and the new local designers that came along with the expansion ranging from jewelry to health and beauty. The following lines will be featured at this first Friday event, Camille Falk Designs, Fig & Yarrow, Butterworth & Bee and in house screen-printed line Black Diamonds. Designers will be on hand from 7pm-10pm to discuss their lines and show off some new product.

A special guest DJ will begin spinning records at 9pm into the evening. Guests can toast to the new space with a beer from Great Divide Brewery or a warm cup of tea.

Fancy Tiger sells the best men’s clothing in Denver. Period.

Friend,

Just want to take a short moment to say thank you for all that you do.

It was very cold this morning. It’s times like this that cause us to stop and be grateful for our homes, for our friends, and for a warm roof over our heads.

As Coloradoans, we have a unique perspective on the world. Our neighbors are always welcomed with open arms, especially when they are coming in from the cold.

Thank you, everyone, for organizing to help our Homeless this holiday season. Especially noteworthy is the Denver Rescue Mission, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, and the Gathering Place.

Anyone looking for a goodwill gift to give this season is free, also, to Give a Gift Canvas to a homeless artists in time for the next Homeless Art Exhibit. Everything helps.

On behalf of strugging artists everywhere, especially those of us in the most need, thank you.

Warmest Wishes,
Denver Art Society Family

Today I am pleased to announce the launch of Art Out Loud 2011. We have many new things in store for this year, including the ability for anyone in Denver to sponsor a creative student at Art Out Loud 2011 for just $65.

I invite you all to join us — all student sponsorships go directly to creative students in Colorado schools.

Join Us.

Hello Denverite,

Congratulations! You have been recommended to the Denver Art Society , a 501(c)3 that supports art for all, as a great candidate to sit on our Event Committee to help plan and grow our annual event, “Art Out Loud.”

2010 was our inaugural year, and Art Out Loud consisted of 30 Colorado artists, and 10 performances by Colorado musicians; all with the intentions of raising funds to help provide free art education to Denver’s youth through the Denver Art Society’s program: Denver Public Art University. With a couple hundred attendees, we were able to raise $2500 in just a few hours.

Our forecast for the future is huge. Our vision is to grow this to be one of Denver’s largest art and music festivals, and the only that consists of solely Colorado talent. You are a key to our success, and we ask that you join us on November 22, 2010 at Sketch Wine Bar located at 101 N. Broadway to learn more about how you can become a part of our team for Art Out Loud 2011.

Sincerely,

Teresa “Traci” Tisserat
Director of Events, Denver Art Society
